Univ.-Prof. Dr. Kai-Oliver Knops

Since his appointment as a full professor at the University of Hamburg (chair in civil and commercial law, especially banking, capital market and consumer law), former specialist lawyer for banking and capital market law, Prof. Dr. Kai-Oliver Knops, has been active in an advisory capacity for KWAG. Initially he has been working in cooperation with KWAG since spring 2008. Since May 2011 he has been active as Of Counsel.

For these activities, he can draw on his extensive experience as a lawyer: for many years Prof. Dr. Knops, was a lawyer at the Higher Regional Court of Cologne and has, among others, represented the consumer side as the main representative in two proceedings before the European Court of Justice (iS Crailsheimer Volksbank and Hamilton, both on real-estate loans through doorstep transaction). He has also emerged through numerous publications, especially from the banking and capital market law. He is co-editor and author of various articles in the German and European Banking Law Manual (edited by Derleder / Knops, / Bamberger), which was published in early 2009 in the second edition, and of the law of Reorganization Financing (ed. Knops/Bamberger/Maier- reimer). He has also made a name for himself through his various commentaries, among others, in Bruck / Möller (ed. by Baumann / Beckmann / K.Johannsen / R.Johannsen), Great commentary on the SG & A, 9th Edition, 2009.

His research and teaching fields include civil law, German and European trade, corporate and commercial law, in particular banking and capital market law, insolvency and reorganization law, insurance law, renewable energy law, civil litigation, as well as methodology and sociology of law. Prof. Dr. Knops, continually gives scientific lectures and works as a consultant to supranational organizations, government agencies, associations, companies, investors as well as lawyers. Until the end of 2009 he was Research Director for banking and capital market law at the Institute for Financial Services as well as editor (chief editor) of a legal journal with a focus on banking, insurance and insolvency law.


Prof. Dr. Kai-Oliver is a board member of various organizations / associations and a member of numerous legal associations.
